[English] Metin Lokumcu protesting AKP killed by police brutality

A retired teacher Metin Lokumcu who protested Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, chairperson of AKP after his meeting in Hopa in Artvin lost his life. He is thought to be killed due to the effects of the gas that police used.

The event occured while Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was leaving for Trabzon meeting from the town. A group of people wanted to protest him as the convoy was passing. Because of the speeding up bus, one of the polices who lost his balance fell from the election bus. Immediately he was taken to hospital but as it has been learnt he has a risk of losing his life.
A retired Teacher Lost his Life
After the protesters unfurled a banner written “Water is a right, it can not be sold” agains hydro electric plants, the police interfrence started. Security forces used pressurized water and pepper gas. Wounded polices and protesters were taken to hospitals. A retired teacher Metin Lokumcu, member of Freedom and Solidarity Party was effected from the gas and had an heart attack. Lokumcu lost his life in the hospital. When this was heard in Hopa and in three big cities, Ankara, İzmir and İstanbul protesters got up against the police forces.

A slip occurred in the cyanide leach heap at the Çöpler Gold Mine in İliç, Erzincan. At least 9 people were trapped under the pile. The cyanide pile is located right next to the Euphrates River. In the application made in June 2023, it was requested to more than double the area of this pile. The company had been authorised to carry out gold mining here despite warnings of disaster in scientific reports years ago.
